Many of the buildings were still extant in 2020 but the scene was much greener with more trees. The Home Ales pub on the corner was called the Bendigo.

Nottingham - NG3 (Old Sneinton)
A view across Hermitage Square with the former Hermitage pub and Sneinton Community Centre behind the observer. The TRACS Neighbourhood Centre building sits between Sneinton Hollows and St Stephen's Road, whereas the bus has stopped outside the former police station on Sneinton Hermitage (i.e. the road of that name).

Sneinton: The Hermitage public house
This pub, on the corner of Sneinton Hollows and Thurgarton Street, was once The Bendigo, named after the Nottingham bare-knuckle boxer William Abednego Thompson (1811-60), whose statue stands above the door.

Sneinton: statue of Bendigo
This concrete statue of the Nottingham bare-knuckle fighter William Abednego Thompson (1811-60) stands over the door of the public house at the corner of Sneinton Hollows and Thurgarton Street which was once named after him. Bendigo had many admirers, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote: "You didn't know of Bendigo? / Well that knocks me out! / Who's your board school teacher? / What's he been about? / Chock a block with fairy tales; / Full of useless cram, / And never heard of Bendigo / The Pride Of Nottingham."

Nottingham - NG3 (Old Sneinton)
Approaching Hermitage Square with St Stephen's Road behind, two substantial properties immediately strike the observer. On the right, a former Methodist Church has been transformed into Sneinton Community Centre with a Karate School operating on the first floor (since 1975) and on the left is the former "Hermitage" pub, now the Zam Zam restaurant. The pub was also known as "The Bendigo" (note the statue of him above the entrance), after William Abednigo Thompson (a.k.a.“Bendigo”). This successful Victorian bare-knuckle fighter/turned evangelist (1811-1880) was born in Nottingham, grew up in poverty in Trinity Walk (off Upper Parliament St) and is buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Sneinton. The statue of him was created and erected by Home Ales Brewery in 1957.
