Horse & Gears
An unusual name, but it does appear to be original - certainly not a modern renaming. 'Gears' presumably refers to the harness (the modern painted sign appears to think so) but 'Gear' would be the more normal usage. Early 19th century public house on Portland Street. Listed Grade II.

Portland Street, Newark, Notts.
A view from near the Portland Street/Albert Street junction provides a glimpse of the former "Horse and Gears" public house. In 2014 it was bought for £200,000 by the Nottingham-based Blue Monkey Brewery and having undergone a £70,000 renovation it reopened as this brewery’s third "Organ Grinder" pub. The others are in Loughborough and Canning Circus, Nottingham. The town centre is behind the photographer and the B6166 ahead leads to Farndon.

Portland Street
Once a busy thoroughfare through Newark, quieter since the Newark bypass opened and now rather run down with lots of empty buildings
