1&3, and 5 Northgate
No.1 & 3 are a pair of houses from the late 17th century, now in use as offices. The original roofing has been replaced with modern concrete tiles and pantiles. The bay windows are late 19th century. No.5 is of the same period but in the local blue lias limestone rather than the much more common brick. The doorway appears to be relatively modern, though reasonably in keeping with the period. All Listed Grade II.

Transport House, Bar Gate, Newark, Notts.
Because the River Trent is only a stone’s throw away behind them, perhaps these two late C19th houses were once commercial offices associated with the transportation of goods on barges on the river? The fanlight over the door nearest the photographer is inscribed “Transport House”.

Newark, Notts (Bar Gate)
A slight tailback on Bar Gate as this authentic looking bow top gypsy caravan approaches Castle Gate roundabout. The Wharf, a short cut between Bar Gate and Beast Market Hill - that passes the rear of "The Ossington" (the former Coffee Palace & Temperance Hotel replica) - can be seen behind the horse's head.
