Butter market commemoration
You do have to wonder about the bona fides of an architect who thinks that a "foundation" stone is 20 feet up in the air above a doorway. These are the two commemorative stones that mark the original opening and the re-opening of the Butter Market as a market hall and as a shopping arcade. The stones can be seen under the round window in Image

The Buttermarket, Middle Gate, Newark, Notts.
Passing foot traffic is seen at street level on Middle Gate. This building, at the rear of the Town Hall, was designed as a covered market hall and it opened in 1884. Its architect was Grantham born-and-educated Charles Bell (1846–1899) who designed many buildings nationwide, including over 60 Wesleyan Methodist chapels. In 1870 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and started an independent practice in London. This market was developed into a complex of small shops and a restaurant/café in 1990.
