Once a railway station
The Virgin Active Health Club was originally the London Road terminus of the Ambergate & Boston, later absorbed by the Great Northern Railway. It opened in 1857. Now glassed in, this was the three-span roof over the platforms, which last saw passenger trains in 1944. Latterly London Road was a parcels depot, which closed in 1981.

Nottingham London Road Low Level Station
Instantly recognisable as a Victorian railway station, this building is now used as a Virgin Active Health Club. It was built in 1857 as the Great Northern Railway's Nottingham terminus but was largely superseded by Victoria when that station opened in 1900. A handful of passenger trains continued to use it until 1944 (just five daily departures to Market Harborough via Melton Mowbray are shown in the 1922 timetable) after which it was used only for mail and parcels. Can there be anyone still alive who remembers catching a train here?

London Road Low Level railway station (site), Nottingham, 2000
The original terminus built by the Great Northern Railway for its line from Grantham, this station was largely superseded by Nottingham Victoria station after 1900, but remained in use for goods and parcels into the 1970s. View east towards Grantham. It still survives in the 2020s.

The former Nottingham London Road Station
The Great Northern Railway's London Road terminus was opened in 1857 by its then owners, the Ambergate & Boston & Eastern Junction Railway, last saw passenger traffic in 1944 and after becoming a parcels depot eventually closed in 1981. The three-gabled train shed sheltered six platforms. It now houses a Virgin Active gym. The red-brick station building, by the Nottingham architect T C Hine, is on the right, with the Jurys Inn hotel behind it, on the other side of London Road.

Nottingham London Road Low Level Station
Ask most Nottingham people about the city's railway history and they will no doubt talk about the Midland station, which still operates, and probably Victoria which, although it closed in 1966, will still be remembered by older residents. But this rather grand affair in an inconvenient location, built by the Great Northern Railway in 1857, has all but passed from living memory as a working passenger station having closed in 1944. Originally the terminus of the branch from Grantham, the station was effectively superseded by Victoria when that opened in 1900 and trains could run there with a stop at the new London Road High Level station. What is perhaps surprising is that the Low Level station continued for a further 44 years with only trains to Market Harborough via Melton Mowbray using it. After closure the site was used as a mail depot and then became a parcels concentration depot for some years in the 1970s. Today the building is used as a Virgin Active Health Club after significant restoration following a fire in 1996.
