Carshalton, Collingham
Collingham has many fine Georgian (and earlier) houses interspersed with Victorian villas and modern infilling. This house is noteworthy because of the diapering of the brickwork in the end wall. The contrast between the normal bricks and the slightly overburnt ones has a pleasing effect. See also Image and Image

Breakaway five
Breakaway group of five riders ahead of the peloton http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5527237 as the Tour of Britain 2017 passes through Collingham. They were eventually caught before the sprint finish in Newark.

Georgian house in Collingham
Driving north along the A1133 my eye was caught by the striking brickwork on the south facing wall (the gable-end) of this building. There was an intricacy about the patterning of the brick which reminded me of Holland. All the bricks laid lengthways (stretchers) are pale, pinkish, while the bricks laid end-on (headers) are dark. Headers and stretchers alternate throughout, hence the zingy, chequered effect. For a closer look, see Image This method of laying bricks is known as 'Flemish bond', so perhaps it's not surprising that I was reminded of Leiden and Delft.
The front is handsome, with good Georgian detail. The brickwork is of good quality, Flemish bond again, but all the bricks are much the same colour, so there is no chequered effect.
