"How dreadful is this place"
The answer is that at the time of my visit it was pretty dreadful, with slates falling off the roof and the church about to be fenced off. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4140985
However this was hardly what was meant when the inscription was created in the 19th century. The quote is from Genesis, Ch.28-17, spoken by Jacob following his dream of the ladder to Heaven. The verse is completed in the lower line of the inscription, which reads: "this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven."
