Curved wall behind former Newcastle Arms
This is a former coaching inn, now nicely restored as an art gallery and horse museum - see http://www.horsemuseum.co.uk/about-tuxford The holes in the wall suggest this may have been the back of a building line with stalls for the many horses which would have been required - up to 74 coaches per day passed through Tuxford on the Great North Road, and as well as the usual teams, an extra "cock horse" hitched at the front was required to get the coaches away through the thick mud which was common there.

Tuxford Lock-up
The two-cell lock-up was used to contain troublemakers until local magistrates decided their fate. Tuxford was a main coaching stop on the old Great North Road, a source of all sorts of villains. It was also close to the Sherwood Forest and its highwaymen. Around 1850 the building of the railways brought in navvies and their drunken pay-days, which led to an increase in trade. But by the late 19th century usage had tailed off and the last prisoner was held here around 1900.
