St.Swithin's church, Wellow
St.Swithin's has a 14th century nave, wide south aisle and a tower with Norman lower masonry, curiously placed at the SW corner. All much restored by Ewan Christian in 1878-9.

Church of St Swithin, Wellow - tower detail
Above is a gargoyle of the 15th century. The dentilled string course below includes a human head on the corner and one corbel to the right that may be a stylised animal head, not untypical of 12th and 13th century work.

Church of St Swithin, Wellow
View from the southwest, showing the prominent buttresses, probably added during 19th century restorations. The lowest stage of the tower is 12th century, although the doorway is 13th century. The belfry stage is 13th century and parapet stages, in dressed stone, 15th century. The west window of the nave http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4024675 was reglazed in 2000. Listed Grade II*. There is a bench mark http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4024670 on the west facing buttress on the near corner of the tower.
