These stand close to what was once the entrance to Welbeck Colliery. When the colliery was open Meden Vale was known as Welbeck Colliery Village.

Miners' memento
I had passed this spot many times in the past without realising its significance. The platform behind the fence was the base of a large bus shelter where large numbers of colliers would wait after their shift for a bus to take them home.
