Mansfield, Notts (Butter Cross)
This replica pump overshadowed by the Westgate Butter Cross in the smaller of Mansfield's two market places was placed here in May 1989 to celebrate the introduction of Methodism in Mansfield in 1788. The original pump commemorated the first Methodist gathering to be held in Mansfield. That service was conducted by John Adams who had walked from Nottingham to preach where he did, i.e. near the original pump.

Mansfield, Notts (Westgate)
The C16th buttercross on Westgate, the smaller of Mansfield's two market squares. On 31st March 1603 James VI of Scotland was proclaimed in this square to be the King of England by Sir John Byron, Knight and several other dignitaries. Originally the cross was surmounted by a large square stone and a stone ball. Behind the van is the entrance to the new library complex (Opened in January 2012). Medieval buttercrosses (a.k.a. butter crosses) provided a central point in the market place where dairy products were often sold, the fresh produce was regularly being displayed on the stepped bases of the cross. This area was home to the cattle market until 1877 when a site on Nottingham Road was opened in its place.
