Castle Gate, Nottingham NG1
The building nearest the photographer is the Cleaves Conference Centre owned and managed by the Congregational Federation. It provides facilities for worship and student accommodation. The adjoining church, nearer to Castle Gate, was previously known as The Castle Gate Congregational Church (and later as The Castle Gate Congregational Centre). The church was designed by Richard Charles Sutton and it opened for worship in 1864. In 1972 the congregation joined the United Reformed Church and three years later the members merged with St. Andrew's United Reformed Church, Goldsmiths Street. However, in 1980 the Congregational Federation purchased the buildings back again and in 2010, the El Shaddai International Christian Centre took out a 5-year lease on the building. It is currently empty.

Congregational Church, Castle Gate, Nottingham
A muscular Victorian church in vivid red brick and many elaborate (and some eccentric) stone dressings. Pevsner describes the style as "blowsy Lombardic Romanesque". By R.C. Sutton, 1863. Grade II listed.
