Portland Park Nature Reserve NG17, Notts.
Ahead, beyond this Grives Farm farm-gate, lies Portland Park Nature Reserve. A large amount of money has been spent recently on improving several footpaths and hard-surfacing the "Top Car Park". A new, metallic, height-restricting barrier can be seen on the left in the distance at the car park entrance.

Portland Park Nature Reserve NG17, Notts.
The resurfacing of this, the "Top Car Park", seems almost complete. An elderly resident explained to me that when he was a boy, 75+ years ago, this was a 10 foot deep quarried area known to local lads as "The Rocks" and that during the past "xyz" years it was used as a tip and gradually filled in, before top soil was deposited on top of it. The 6th Duke of Portland gave the whole of this 10 hectare (25 acre) site to the Urban District Council in 1914 for recreational use, to commemorate his 25th wedding anniversary and his son's 21st birthday.

Portland Park car park
Looking east across the flat meadows of Grives Farm to the houses of Nuncargate. On a drab November day, this small country park has an air of faded glory. The park was donated to the people of Kirkby by the Duke of Portland in 1910 and was a popular formal park for many years with bandstand, tennis courts, gardens and ponds. Today, nature has been allowed to take over and the landscape is more natural. The well-produced brochure by Ashfield District Council shows that this limestone habitat supports rare species. http://www.ashfield-dc.gov.uk/ccm/content/leisure-and-culture/parks-and-recreation/parks-and-recreation.en?page=4
