The Mock Fort and Stable Block
On the eastern shore of Upper Lake, these buildings are Victorian. The lake itself was enlarged by the outlandish 5th Lord Byron in the 18th century and was used for mock naval battles with a miniature fleet of ships, complete with their own crews.

A view of The Fort, Newstead Abbey
Seen across The Upper Lake, The Fort was actually the stable block of Newstead Abbey - constructed in the early nineteenth century when the main abbey building underwent major renovations. Nowadays The Fort has been converted into several residential units.

Newstead Abbey stable block
Quite an impressive building in its own right, now converted into living accommodation. The sign indicates 'residents only' off to the right. Owner Thomas Wildman spent much money restoring Newstead Abbey in the early 19th century following the lack of maintenance by various Lord Byrons. Wildman died in 1859 and his widow, left short of funds, was obliged to sell the estate. The new owner William Webb added modern improvements such as gas lighting and central heating. He also built this stable block in 1862.
