Byron Cinema, Hucknall
Unlike Eastwood, which for many years shunned D H Lawrence, Hucknall has always seemed to be proud of its literary connection - even though Lord Byron was hardly a stranger to scandal. The Byron name was even used for its cinema built in 1936 in the then fashionable art deco style. As television became readily available, small town cinemas began to suffer and the building was partly converted into a bingo club in 1967 incorporating a much smaller cinema in the former upstairs balcony area. This cinema closed in 2006 but the bingo club stuttered on until 2018. Happily, the building was sold and converted into a thoroughly modernised four-screen cinema, reopening as the Arc Cinema at the Byron in 2020.
