The birth place and home of Eric Coates (1886-1957) on the corner of Duke Street and Beardall Street as seen here with the greater part of Duke Street behind the photographer. Coates has been described as 'the uncrowned King of light music composition'. He also played the viola. He is perhaps best known for his composition "By the Sleepy Lagoon" (1930) that is still used to introduce "Desert Island Discs" on Radio 4 and for "The Dambusters March" (1954), the music used in this classic film.

Beardall Nursery, Infants and Junior School on Beardall Street, with Watnall Lane behind the photographer. This school is reputed to be one of the oldest former Elementary Schools in the area. The original sandstone premises were built circa 1872 at a cost of nearly £2,000. On the distant left hand corner, where a white car can be seen waiting to pull out from Duke Street into Beardall Street, is the birth place and home of Eric Coates - "The Uncrowned King (Composer) of Light Music". Although he also played the viola, he is probably best known for his composition "By the Sleepy Lagoon" (1930) that is still used to introduce the "Desert Island Discs" on Radio 4 and for "The Dambusters March" (1954), from the film "The Dambusters".
