The white Stalinist tower is The Newton Building, now part of Nottingham Trent University, but originally built in 1956-8 for what later became the Polytechnic. To its left in the distance, on the corner of Talbot Street and Goldsmith Street (just in this gridsquare), the cream building with brown cupola and two round windows is the first home of Nottingham Playhouse, originally a cinema. Some distance from the present town hall and commercial heart of the city. The choice of Darley Dale stone also sets it apart from other Nottingham buildings. French style with central porticos and pyramidal-roofed ends. By Verity & Hunt, 1884-88. Grade II listed. It has been empty since 2010 when it was vacated by the city council.
