Nottingham Victoria station, with Up local train
View northward, towards Sheffield on the ex-GC main line, to Derby on the ex-GN line, etc. A local train, probably from the latter, has arrived on the Down side, headed by Thompson L1 2-6-4T No. 67792 (built 6/50, withdrawn 12/62). The scene emphasizes the grandiose of this important station as it was 50 years ago.

Nottingham Victoria railway station (site)
Opened in 1899 by the Great Central Railway on the line from London Marylebone to Sheffield Victoria, this station closed in 1967. View east towards the former forecourt from Shakespeare Street. Only the clock tower survives. The rest of the site became the Victoria shopping centre.

Shadow and reflection . . .
. . . are still enough to identify the Victoria Clock Tower. The building is an office block forming part of the Victoria Centre complex which replaced the Victoria Railway Station.

Victoria Centre and Clock Tower, Milton Street, Nottingham
The clock tower is the only fragment of Victoria Station to survive redevelopment which produced the shopping centre complex in 1965-72. It was built in 1898-1900 by A.E. Lambert. Grade II listed. Behind are another element of the scheme, flats (Image]). Another view: Image

Southward into the tunnels from Nottingham Victoria, with Up ore empties
View from Platform 4 towards Leicester Central and London Marylebone on the ex-GC main line, also Colwick Yards and Grantham on the ex-GN. The signalbox in the gloom between the Parliament Street bridge and Thurland Street tunnel is Nottingham Victoria South. The ore empties, probably bound for Colwick, is being worked tender-first by O4/1 2-8-0 No. 63707. This engine ended its days in 7/65 unrebuilt, having been No. 3540 (for three months) in 1946-7 and No. 6193 in 10/24, having been built for the GCR in 9/1912 as No. 1193 and was not one of the many built for the Government in World War 1.
