Entering Clifton village
It's always a pleasant surprise to come across the peaceful, 'genteel' atmosphere of a village in the middle of a modern, built-up suburb.

The Clifton Dovecote
Reportedly one of the largest dovecotes in England with 2,300 nesting places all of which extend 14 inches into the wall. The plaque seen on the south facing wall is the "Role of Service 1914-18" for the village of Clifton.

Clifton Green and dovecote
There had been no rain for some weeks and at the end of June 2018 there were high temperatures and cloudless skies, so the mowed grass was dry and yellow. According to the Nottinghamshire History website, quoting "Links with Old Nottingham" (1928), "Clifton Dovecote seems to date from the eighteenth century, and is picturesquely situated on the village green. Its accommodation is enormous for it provides 2,300 nesting boxes. This is by far the greatest number of nesting boxes in any dovecote in Nottinghamshire, and Clifton Dovecote is probably the most commodious in England".
