25132 up on the jacks inside Toton depot. Both bogies have been removed allowing work to be done on them. Toton was equipped to do all levels of maintenance with the exception of a full overhaul, which was normally carried out at Derby works. Another 25 waits behind and a 45 stands in the adjacent road.

Toton Depot
Locomotives stand outside the depot awaiting their next duty. Classes represented here are, left to right, 45, 44, 47, 08, 56, 20. The class 47 is probably an interloper from Tinsley. The class 44, nearest loco on the left, is 44004 'Great Gable', one of the 10 original 'Peak' class locomotives. The 44's were only employed on passenger duties for a short time - being ousted by the more powerful class 45's and spent the rest of their lives hauling freight at Toton. 44004 was finally withdrawn in October 1980 - one of the last 3 in service. Some of its sisters were already at Derby works awaiting the cutters torch when this photo was taken. Happily, 44004 has been preserved, see some photos at - http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/engines/44004_index.htm.

08334 stands behind the locomotive washer in Toton depot. Although there is evidence of it being used, most locos on freight duties tended to become very grimy.

Toton Locomotive Maintenance Depot
The depot is operated by the German railfreight company DB Schenker. The wagons in the foreground have recently been painted in DB's red livery, as have some of the former EWS locomotives in the depot. In my trainspotting days this was Toton Shed (18A) - only just before my time the home of the Beyer-Garratt locomotives which hauled coal on the Midland main line.
