The underside of Armstrong Bridge
The Armstrong Bridge was designed and built by William Armstrong in 1878 and spans the Ouseburn valley at Armstrong Park. It carried traffic until 1963 when cars were banned and traffic diverted onto the nearby Benton Bridge which carries the Coast Road (A1058).

Armstrong Bridge, Jesmond Dene
Armstrong Bridge was constructed 1875-78 for the citizens of Newcastle by Sir William Armstrong, and Messrs. WE Jackson, masons.
The wrought iron girders and columns are set on cast iron rocker bearings, and the central column has sliding bearings, to allow for movement caused by mining subsidence and heat. Such articulated construction was next used in building motorway footbridges.
