Heaton post office is located near the junction of Heaton Road with Shields Road, Byker. This view of the post office was taken from Heaton Road looking in a northerly direction towards Heaton.

A series of photos of places to eat in either on, or just off, Shields Rd, Byker. This is just off Shields Road but I couldn't exclude, not least because it's by far the best cafe and we can be found here most Saturday (late) mornings reading the Guardian and having the full fried breakfast. I have been told, but I don't know if it's true, that Cheryl Cole, the pop princess and x factor judge, used to wait on tables here - I certainly haven't noticed her in here recently

The long closed Kwik Save store on Heaton Road in Byker. The building still retains most of its branding including the slogan "Britain's No. 1 food discounter". Unfortunately even if this was true it didn't help the business survive in the 21st century, as after various changes in ownership the chain finally collapsed all its stores closed in 2007.

This rather ornate but nonetheless attractive building, which was built in about 1904, was originally occupied by the Newcastle Savings Bank which had been founded in 1818. It operated successfully for over 150 years until, in 1971, it merged with South Shields Savings Bank and became as the Northumberland and Durham Trustee Savings Bank. Then, following an 1976 Act of Parliament reforming banks, it became part of the Trustee Savings Bank North East (later known simply as TSB) and, in December 1995, TSB merged with Lloyds Bank Limited. The bank is now closed, like so many High Street banks, and the building is currently on the market.

A series of photos of places to eat in either on, or just off, Shields Rd, Byker. This is just off Shields Road but counts, mainly as it does great, and amazingly cheap, pizza. And, because I once saw a couple aged about 16 having what I think must have been their first date here. Both ordered prawn cocktail, then pizza and they both drank diet coke - they hardly spoke but held hands throughout, it was so romantic it nearly made me cry.

In 1908, the old 168 Shields Road branch of Lloyds Bank moved into an attractive new building across the road at number 167 Shields Road. This imposing three storey corner building, with an all stone façade complete with 2nd storey columns, still retains the name of the bank in the rainwater hopper attached to the Heaton Road elevation. In 2015, with the property having been empty for eight years following the closure of the bank, work began on the transformation of the building into 22 apartments.
