The Dirty Bottles, Alnwick
Now called the 'Dirty Bottles', the original inn was called 'The Cross' but in 1725 the landlord died of a heart attack while cleaning the front window. Believing it to be cursed the window was shuttered and never (supposedly) reopened. The state of the window gave rise to the name 'Dirty Bottles'. For a view of the plaque refer to picture Image

Alnwick Townscape : Have They Heard Of Eric Newby?
Moshulu, ex Dreadnought, ex Kurt. Four Masted steel barque. 5,300 tons d.w., 3,116 gross,2,911 net. Built by William Hamilton, Port Glasgow 1904. In 1938, Eric Newby, later to become one of best-loved of English travel writers, signed on as an apprentice on the Finnish four-masted barque Moshulu for a round the world voyage to carry grain to Europe from the South Australian wheatbelt. His vivid account of that 1938/39 voyage, "The Last Grain Race", was first published in 1956 by Martin Secker & Warburg Ltd. A superb photographic record of that trip, using Newby's stunning photographs, was published by John Murray in 1999 as "Learning The Ropes". Moshulu is more than just the name of a shoe shop!
