Coble fishing boats
A type of open fishing boat known as a coble developed on the North East coast of England. The distinctive shape of the boat — flat-bottomed and high-bowed — arose to cope with the particular conditions prevalent in this area. Flat bottoms allowed launching from and landing upon shallow, sandy beaches; an advantage in this part of the coast where the wide bays and inlets provided little shelter from stormy weather. However, fishermen required high bows to sail in the dangerous North Sea and in particular to launch into the surf and to land on the beaches. The design contains relics of Norse influence, though in the main it shows Dutch origin.

Nevins Nibbles Cafe, Newbiggin by the Sea
Formerly Bertorelli’s cafe, Nevins Nibbles keep this lovely art deco building in good use. Serving over 90 different types of scones, including curry, mince and dumpling, corned beef and beetroot as well as the more traditional fruit and cheese varieties - we had fruit, not very imaginative but very nice. The owner tells us that he will soon be supplying all his scones via mail order

To view a Northern Mockingbird
A Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) in a garden of a house in Manor Drive, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, viewed from an adjacent yard and parking area off Front Street. This is an exceptionally rare North American vagrant and probably the same individual recorded in January/February at Exmouth and April in West Sussex. The bird was present at this unlikely Northumberland location from 5 May and last seen on 9 May. This photograph was taken at approximately 1540 hrs.
The remarkable origin of this record is detailed in this article: https://www.birdguides.com/articles/to-relocate-a-mockingbird-in-northumberland
This photograph was taken during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic of 2020/21.
