Walker Fan house at Woodhorn
Originally a steam-driven fan, this was seriously damaged in a WWII bombing raid, and a new electric motor was installed in 1942. The date is given on the stone near the top of the chimney. The low sloping roof to the right covers the entrance to the short sloping drift which connected the fan to the upcast shaft. The latter was made airtight with seals and airlocks so that air drawn up by the fan was replaced by fresh air travelling down the other shaft (the downcast). A series of air doors in the underground workings directed the flow of air to reach current working faces.

Poppies at Woodhorn Museum, Ashington
The "Weeping Window" on display at Woodhorn Museum, Ashington. The artwork formed part of the "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red" installation which was created at the Tower of London in autumn 2014 as part of commemorations to mark 100 years since the start of the 1st World War. After the end of the temporary display in 2014 a large number of the ceramic poppies were sold off, however 2 large parts were preserved and are touring around the country. Whilst at the Tower of London the sculpture was sited under a window Image here it is sited under one of the winding wheels which were part of the former Woodhorn Colliery.
