The House of Correction
According to the Hexham Local History Society leaflet 'Industrial Area and Tyne Green', this building "is the surviving part of the House of Correction for housing miscreants, established in 1784. The surviving structure with slit windows and strong door was erected c1820 and connected to domestic buildings (now demolished) forming an L-shaped range. The House of Correction was no longer used as such after c1870 and [was] sold in 1876 and converted for housing".

House of Correction, Tyne Green Lane, Hexham
Dates from the early C19. Since last geographed Image its surrounds have deteriorated somewhat and to obtain even this view I had to move a shopping trolley and various items of litter out of the way.

Hexham House of Correction
Houses of Correction started as an experiment influenced by European philosophers. The aim was to both punish, and at the same time train, petty criminals so that they would become useful members of society. Simple crafts were taught to prisoners while in custody. This attempt failed, but houses of correction continued to be used across the country for petty criminals such as children who stole, prostitutes, ‘sturdy beggars’, and lunatics.
