Wylam Garage
This red brick building was formerly the stables of the nearby Wylam Mill. The Mill had previously been powered by water from the Oakwood Burn but was later converted to steam power and its prominent chimney a local landmark. The Mill was destroyed by fire in 1931 and completely demolished.

Supermarket, Wylam
A Co-op supermarket in the small village of Wylam. The shop looks like a recent arrival in the village and Image shows the building in use as a car dealership in 2011.

Former smithy, Wylam
The building is currently home to a small business, 'Wylam Tiles & Crafts'. It was in use as a Blacksmith's Shop until the 1930s. Old maps show a building in this location in 1897, but absent earlier, possibly making it unlikely to have been involved in the building of the Wylam Colliery steam locomotives between 1813 and 1815 as has been suggested http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=23051
However, other colliery workshops were in this part of the village, close to the former flour mill. Timothy Hackworth, blacksmith and locomotive engineer, was born in a terraced house nearby, and worked at Christopher Blackett's colliery from 1808.

Former smithy, Wylam

"The last remaining part of the buildings where William Hedley built Puffing Billy and Wylam Dilly. Timothy Hackworth, John Foster and William Hedley built the first Wylam engine in 1811, the first properly useful steam locomotive, followed by the preserved Puffing Billy and Wylam Dilly in 1814-15."

Hollow-way to old ferry crossing, Tyne View, Wylam
Close to the site of an old ford, which apart from a small ferry, had been the only means of crossing the River Tyne before the opening of the bridge. Even after the bridge was built in 1836, the ford continued to be well-used by drovers who wanted to avoid having to pay the bridge tolls. A hollow-way created by users of the ford can be seen running down the grass to the river bank just east of the terraced houses of Tyne View.
