Dolly Peel statue, River Drive, South Shields
Dorothy ('Dolly') Peel (1782-1857) was a South Shields fishwife and smuggler and famous local character. She often attempted to protect local sailors from the press gang.

Dolly Peel statue
This statue of Dolly Peel (1782 - 1857), celebrated fishwife, smuggler, nurse and "character", stands on green space adjacent to River Drive. The lean on the plinth is not a photographic fault - the plinth really does lean at about 4 degrees from the vertical!

South Shields: end of the line by the River Tyne, 1953
The view is westwards across the river to the docks at North Shields, at the end of the electrified line via Pelaw which continued, probably primarily to coal staithes by the river, some distance beyond South Shields station, the terminus of the line from Newcastle. In the foreground is one of the older (ex-NER 1920) EMUs.
