History and the future at South Shields
In the days of sail this bend on the River Tyne was known as Comical Corner where numerous sailing vessels would get into difficulties tacking to and fro across the river in changing winds and avoiding other vessels doing the same.

"Spirit of South Shields"
This scantily clad maiden apparently symbolises the spirit of South Shields. This sculpture by Irene Brown was installed in 2000 on the banks of the River Tyne at the entrance to Market Dock.
She harbours a ship safely in one arm whilst raising her other arm in greeting. The Spirit is seen as the protector - guiding the ship through the seas safely. She stands strong and optimistic, unafraid and invigorated by the winds of change. She is the prow, the figurehead for South Shields' future.
New apartment blocks on Long Row can be seen beyond the dock entrance.

A Bronze figurehead statue
Unfortunately there is no plaque or info on it but it is a nice statue.
There has been a tiny bit of vandalism on the base where one of the little cast buildings has been smashed off, must have taken some doing - can't be seen in this image.
The bridge behind is the main road and the cars are parked on it...

'Spirit of South Shields', Jetty at Captains Wharf
The sculpture by artist, Irene Brown, was installed in 2000. The bronze statue in the form of a ship's figurehead looks out over the River Tyne close to the path of the passenger ferry. The same figure has been used at other locations in South Shields.
