Palmer Statue in Jarrow town Centre
The statue of Charles Mark Palmer (Baronet) with its back to the Viking Centre in Jarrow This statue has done the rounds over the years It started off in Clayton Street (with its back to the Palmer Memorial Hospital) Then it was moved to Tyne Street overlooking the Tyne (with its back to Jarrow) And now it's been moved to the Town Centre on Grange Road overlooking the Town Hall (with its back to the Viking Centre) The Councillors want to make their minds up? 'Should it go or should it stay?'

Jarrow: Sir Charles Mark Palmer statue
Situated on Grange Road more or less outside the post office, the front panel reads: Sir Charles Mark Palmer Baronet Born at South Shields, November 3rd 1822. Founder of the Palmer works and of the town of Jarrow of which he was first mayor in 1875. Originator of the first steam screw collier built at Jarrow in 1851. Member of Parliament for North Durham from 1874 and subsequently for the Jarrow Division. This statue, erected in 1903 by the workmen of Palmer's company and a few friends, commemorates a life devoted to the social enhancement of the working classes, the prosperity of Jarrow and the industrial progress of Tyneside.
