Beaches and Cream, Victoria Crescent, Cullercoats
This popular café stands on the corner of Victoria Crescent and John Street and enjoys enviable views over Cullercoats Bay. For many years this corner site was occupied by a Maynards sweet shop and, to this day, the site is still known to many locals as 'Maynards Corner'. Maynards was a British confectionery manufacturer which began its long life in 1880 when Charles Riley Maynard and his brother Tom started manufacturing sweets in their kitchen in Stamford Hill in Hackney, London. Next door, Charles's wife, Sarah Ann, ran a sweet shop selling their products and in 1896 the brothers formed the Maynards sweet company. Ultimately, by the 1980s, the company operated 140 shops.
