1-4 Spanish Battery, Tynemouth
The Spanish Battery was built 1545 by Henry VIII as part of the curtain wall of Tynemouth Castle - with the gun battery manned by Spanish Mercenaries -hence the name. The original walls were demolished over the years
and now only the tops of concrete 20th century gun emplacements can now be seen. These four 1895-built two-storey houses form a smart brick terrace, with darker brick string courses, stone detailing and intact tall chimneys. Collingwood Cottage, Spanish Battery, Tynemouth

Built in the early 20th century, this somewhat updated property has, along with nearby 1-6 Old Coastguard Cottages, an historical connection to the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, founded in 1864.
