Post Box, Fairfield Drive, West Monkseaton
This post box dates from the reign of Queen Elizabeth (1952-2022). This is a self-contained box, smaller than a pillar box, and designed to be mounted above ground level, usually attached to a pole, slim pedestal, lamp post, or telegraph pole. They can also be mounted on (or very rarely within) a wall. For over a century, British post boxes were branded with, "POST OFFICE" but this branding changed to, "ROYAL MAIL" with the functional separation of Post Office Counters Limited from the Royal Mail Letters and Parcels divisions in 2001. This post box was therefore erected pre-2001. This post box is decorated with an Easter themed topper. These are often called "yarn bombs", which are knitted/crocheted decorations intended to cheer communities, celebrate holidays, or mark national events and placed on the top of post boxes. They began to gain popularity in the early 2000s.

West Monkseaton Shops
Fittingly for an area close to the sea, this parade of shops includes a traditional fish 'n chipper. The small sign to the left reads 'Jockey's Whips' - rhyming slang, y'see?
