Public Footpath, South Wellfield
This footpath leads from the South Wellfield Pedestrian Crossing https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6448948 to Otterburn Avenue, South Wellfield where it then connects with a public footpath leading towards Earsdon village. Ahead, the well-walked path heads through an open five bar gate with the remnants of an earlier small gate and adjacent step stile still visible to the left. This footpath, which hugs the field boundary, heads towards a junction of two public footpaths https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6451178 with a choice of either turning left towards Earsdon Road and the northern end of Shiremoor, or keeping straight ahead to Earsdon village and the delights of two public houses, the Red Lion and the Cannon. Signage at South Wellfield Pedestrian Crossing
This pedestrian crossing links South Wellfield with Murton village and West Monkseaton, crossing the Tyne & Wear Metro Light Railway at a point between West Monkseaton and Shiremoor stations. This public footpath continues across the Tyne & Wear Metro Light Railway line, running between West Monkseaton and Shiremoor stations, to a small, almost triangular field to the rear of properties on Otterburn Avenue, South Wellfield. Old Stone Gatepost near South Wellfield
This old stone gatepost stands close to the public footpath sign shown at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6451178 and at the junction of two public footpaths. When the first Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area was published in 1865 this area formed part of Earsdon Grange Farm, with the footpath, indicated by the sign at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6451178, then linking the farm with Earsdon village where there were two inns, the Red Lion and the Cannon, St. Alban's Church, a Methodist Chapel and a Smithy.
