Old Stone Gate Post near South Wellfield
This gate post has long since lost its gate as well as its matching gate post. The keen-eyed will spot, towards the base of the post, a bench mark. Ordnance Survey bench marks (BM) are survey marks made by Ordnance Survey to record height above Ordnance Datum. If the exact height of one BM is known, the exact height of the next can be found by measuring the difference in heights, through a process of spirit levelling. It is certainly an out-of-the-way, difficult-to-spot bench mark. For a selection of detailed free to download walking routes in the area visit www.northtynesidewalks.co.uk
