Parsons Polygon, Blackett Street
This monument in Newcastle's city centre commemorates Charles Parsons, the famous northeast engineer. Designed in 1985 by David Hamilton in terracotta, it has designs copied from Parsons' engineering drawings. It also contains a secret - an air shaft for the Monument Metro Station underneath.

'Parsons Polygon', Blackett Street
An art-work by David Hamilton in 1985. The brick and tile structure conceals a ventilation shaft for the Metro system. The ceramic relief marks the achievements of Sir Charles Algernon Parsons (1854-1931), the designer of Turbinia, a steam turbine powered yacht http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Algernon_Parsons
The designs pressed into the clay are based on Parson's engineering drawings.

Parsons Polygon, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
This structure is a ventilation shaft for the Tyne & Wear Metro, which runs underground through the centre of Newcastle. It has been clad as a public artwork. In the background is Grey's Monument.
