34-44 Pilgrim Street, NE1
Built c 1837 for Richard Grainger. This section of Pilgrim Street is the rear of Image, and so should be attributed to Green's, the architects of the theatre. The building has the usual wings, but, because of its short length, no central pavilion; all three windows of the central bay are blind. The building is Grade II listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1325961 . See also Image The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.33. See Image

Shakespeare Street, NE1
The north side; originally houses and shops, the buildings were incorporated into Image following the fire of 1899. The facade shows how that on the south side of the street would have looked before the ghastly irruption of No.16 - see Image The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.7. See Image

The rear of the block whose west end is the Theatre Royal, but this still puts on quite a show with its giant pilasters and pedimented windows. Probably by John and Benjamin Green, c1837, for Richard Grainger. Grade II listed.

Police station, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle
Fittingly monumental, making a civic statement. By Cackett, Burns Dick & Mackellar, 1931-33. It actually incorporated a police station, fire station and magistrates' courts. Grade II listed.
