Chimney, Swalwell
This old factory chimney, one of the very few remaining, is a prominent landmark in Swalwell. Belonged to a paper mill. Papermaking began sometime in the 19th century using power from the Derwent. The firm was called the Northumberland Paper Mills, owners William Grace and Co. The chimney was restored using the original mortar type. It now stands in Lidl car park. A stark reminder of an industrial age.
