Central Metro Station
The brightly coloured mural above the escalator at the Central Station entrance to the Metro is 'Wakes Week' by Steve McNulty (1985). It is a large abstract mural composed of a sequence of vitreous enamel panels which extend over two walls, at right angles to each other. Its ordered surface, of horizontal white lines, is disrupted by bold angular coloured lines that run off in all directions. Conveying a sense of energy and vibrancy these lines break free from the underlying structure of the overall composition. In this sense the work visualises ‘Wakes Week’, the traditional summer holiday which marked the annual closure of factories and mills around the north of England https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakes_week http://www.nexus.org.uk/art-transport/commissions/wakes-week-steve-mcnulty

Refurbished Portico, Newcastle Central Station
Looking across a new pedestrian only space towards the now glazed and enclosed portico which has created a new interior space for people travelling through the station. 2 years earlier the space was occupied by a busy taxi rank Image, but the taxis have now been banished to a rank behind the camera.

Mobikes have hit the Toon
A novel approach to public bike hire schemes is the Mobike scheme. The bikes are of unique design with solid tyres and shaft drive; none of the components are usable on any other sort of bike to discourage theft. There are no "docking stations". Instead, cycles may be picked up and left at any location in central Newcastle and the whole scheme is managed by smartphone apps. In this it resembles the Call a Bike scheme run by Deutsche Bahn in many German cities.
