Northern Goldsmiths, Blackett Street and Pilgrim Street corner
Built around 1895 as a jewellers shop with offices and workshops above and later altered in 1930s. The square clock topped with a female figure representing Venus, designed by Alfred Glover, was added to the building in 1935. The red domed roof houses a peal of bells which are now once again linked to the clock. Northern Goldsmiths is a local jewellery business. Inside, many of the original fittings survive in excellent condition. Because of the need for a high level of light in showrooms and work rooms, there is an unusual high percentage of windows. Northern Goldsmith's, Blackett Street, Newcastle
A 2s exposure reveals a 'ghost' bus speeding across the Blackett Street junction with Pilgrim Street on the left. Goldsmiths' website on 2nd July 2015 recorded: "Northern Goldsmiths is undoubtedly a huge part of Goldsmiths’ history. The legendary store sits on the corner of Pilgrim Street and Blackett Street, Newcastle, and has done since 1892. The store is one of the longest standing in the Goldsmiths estate and has become a flagship showroom. The original features of the golden building such as the Birdcage, the 24 carat gold Rolex clock and the golden Lady Venus have all been rejuvenated and restored. The store holds a host of memories for the people of Newcastle and over the years has become a Newcastle landmark, known to light up the streets at night. Goldsmiths invites you to explore the magical legacy of Northern Goldsmiths and experience the newly refurbished showroom in all its glory. Northern Goldsmiths brings an element of magic and heritage to the city, with over 230 years of tradition. In fact, many still use the iconic Rolex clock on the building, also known as the ‘kissing clock’ as a meeting scene today. It has been the place of many wonderful proposals over the years and holds a place in many people’s hearts." https://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Northern-Goldsmiths-re-opens
