Doorway to Cordwainers' Hall, Blackfriars
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the church within the grounds of Blackfriars Friary Image was demolished and the cloister buildings were taken over by nine of the town's craft companies or Guilds (acting both as a Trade Union and professional body). Cordwainers were shoe-makers or other workers in leather. The Hall was rebuilt in 1843 by John Wardle, dated above the door.
