The new Sandman Signature Hotel now occupies the former head office building of Newcastle Breweries. Behind the hotel buildings of the Downing Plaza development can be seen.

Looking west along Gallowgate past the junction with the A189, on the west side of Newcastle city centre. This area has been redeveloped with office blocks and student accommodation since the closing and demolition of Newcastle Breweries in 2005.

Right of centre, Strawberry Place joins Gallowgate which to the right becomes Barrack Road. On the far left, the old town walls are just visible showing the direction to the city centre. Shiny tower blocks dominate the scene. To the left, City Gate forms a wall along the boulevard of Blenheim Street. In the centre, the striking, curved office block previously the headquarters of the Scottish & Newcastle Brewery, the only remaining building of the Tyne Brewery site, demolished for a new development, Science City. I photographed this same telephone box in 2010 Image Since then a new blue tower block (The View) has been slotted in between the Sandman Signature Hotel and the Newcastle University Business School with another high-rise block of student accommodation beyond.

The area has transformed in recent years since the closure of the Newcastle Brewery. From left to right are Citygate (government department), Sandman Signature Hotel (former HQ of the Newcastle Breweries), The View (student accommodation), Newcastle Business School (Newcastle University), St James' Point (student accommodation) and St James' Park (Newcastle United FC).

The general proportions and sobriety give the game away that this is an older building which has been remodelled. Built by C.P. Wakefield-Brand, 1965, as offices for Scottish & Newcastle Brewery. Converted to a Sandman Signature hotel c2010.
