The Richard Grainger Memorial Fountain, Waterloo Street, NE1
Richard Grainger (1797–1861) was a builder in Newcastle who worked with the architects John Dobson and Thomas Oliver, and with the town clerk John Clayton, to redevelop the centre of Newcastle in the 1830s. Grainger Street and the Grainger Market are named after him, and the whole area around Grey Street and Grainger Street is known as Grainger Town. For further info, see the Wiki entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Grainger . In 1892, according to the will of one of Richard Grainger's 13 children, this memorial fountain was erected - but not in this spot. It was moved to its current location from further up the street in the early 1980s as part of the Clayton Street West housing scheme. The fountain is Grade II listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1122654 . See also Image The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.84. See Image

Alfred Wilson House, Waterloo Street, NE1
Built in 1933 as a Co-operative Wholesale Society Drapery Warehouse, by CWS architect W G Townsend Grey. Brick bays and buttresses give a very strong vertical emphasis, relieved by decorative metal panels below the windows. The building was converted into around 80 flats in 2003.
