1901 by B.F. Simpson. Ashlar ground floor and basement to office; brick with ashlar dressings above and for power station. Roof of Welsh slate with copper turrets and ashlar coping. Grade II listed, ref. 456490. Now a venue for conferences, events, meetings and training.

Fortiter Defendit Triumphans
This inscribed stone, with the City of Newcastle coat of arms, is part of the Image During the English Civil War, Newcastle supported the king and in 1644 the city was besieged for many months. The grateful King bestowed the motto "Fortiter Defendit Triumphans" ("Triumphing by a brave defence") on the town.
