The Black Gate
The Black Gate was originally built between 1247 and 1250, under the orders of Henry III, to strengthen the entrance to the castle. In the 17th century two new stories were added, and it was converted into tenements. It is currently the headquarters of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The Black Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne
Built c1250 at the behest of Henry III at a cost of £514, 15s. 11d. and protected by moats, drawbridges and iron portcullises, the Black Gate was latterly the principal entrance to the castle. The upper storeys were rebuilt in the 17th century.
