Preserved Garratt Locomotive at Summerlee
A large articulated 2-8-4+4-8-2 steam locomotive made by the North British Locomotive Company at Springburn in 1956. It was used for freight traffic by South African Railways. It is 3'6" gauge, 90 ft long and weighs 190 tons. It does not seem in quite as good condition as when photographed by Tam Nugent 3 years earlier Image, and the surrounding fence rather spoils the view.

Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life - Garratt Locomotive
South African Railways No. 4112 was built in 1958 by North British, Glasgow, Subcontracted from Beyer Peacock. Built as a GMA/GMAM class. GMA was used on lighter branch lines. GMAM by removing some steel plates, were used on mainline and carried more water and coal. All locomotives were coupled to an auxiliary water tender. The class operated until the early 1980s. It is a 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt articulated locomotive of 3' 6" gauge. It has received some cosmetic restoration but much of it is still rough and in need of attention.

The Summerlee industrial museum
Whenever we come here (and this is the second time) it seems to be a dull damp day. This is the entrance to the museum, which is both very interesting and free - the latter being very unusual in this cash-strapped age.
