Path through the trees
Along the south side of the churchyard at Carmichael. In the early evening the trees most certainly give a gloomy aspect to the place.

The serpent in Cairngryffe Kirkyard
Cairngryffe Kirkyard holds another old symbolic stone that uses the same verse and an extract from the 1727 carving where the serpent is holding an apple from the Tree of Life. Damage to this stone has been repaired. See Image for the complete carving. The stone emphasises the 18th century Protestant message of hellfire and damnation.

A table-stone in Cairngryffe Kirkyard
The legs of this old table-stone in Cairngryffe Kirkyard hold individual carvings that symbolise death. They include a grotesque skull, a bone, an hour-glass and the grave-digger’s tools. One leg shows the serpent in the Garden of Eden holding an apple from the Tree of Life. This carving seems to be a local speciality. See also Image
