Caledonian '60' class 4-6-0 at Motherwell Locomotive Depot
In the Depot yard is one of the surviving Pickersgill/Hughes '60' class 4 4-6-0s, normally used for freight work. No. 14640 - yet to be renumbered 54640 - rests from its usual work on the main line to Carlisle. This engine was built in 1925 and withdrawn in 10/52. Motherwell Depot was primarily a freight locomotive depot: coded 66B by BR(ScR), it had an allocation in 1950 of 116:- 20 4-6-0, 6 4-4-0, 11 ex-WD 2-10-0, 7 ex-WD 2-8-0, 40 0-6-0, 4 2-6-4T, 2 2-6-2T, 22 0-6-0T and 4 0-4-4T.

Two Caledonian locomotives at Motherwell Depot, temporarily disabled
Two ex-Caledonian locomotives in the Locomotive Yard at Motherwell, dumped minus tenders and some of their wheels. On the left, Pickersgill 72 class 3P 4-4-0 No. 54506 (built 12/22, withdrawn 11/61); on the right Pickersgill/Hughes 4P 4-6-0 No. 54636 (built 1925, withdrawn 2/53). Therefore, in spite of appearances, these locomotives were not abandoned but had some years of active work ahead of them.

War Department 2-10-0 in Motherwell Locomotive Yard
With a dominating back-drop of spoil heaps, ex-WD 2-10-0 No. 73798 'North British' stands at Motherwell Depot. It is a Riddle 2-10-0, 150 of which were built in 1944-45 by the North British Locomotive Co. at their Hyde Park (Glasgow) Works, this being one (built 8/45) of the last batch of 25 that were never sent abroad but were run on BR and officially purchased in 12/48. All were working in the Scottish Region by late 1949 but were withdrawn by the end of 1962: No. WD 73798 became BR No. 90773 and was withdrawn in 12/62. If the engine was not so filthy you could see that the words 'North ... British' surround the 21st Army Group flash of a blue cross on a red shield.

Motherwell shed 66B
Outside the shed are a couple of class 37 locos . Motherwell at this time was mainly a depot for freight locos. The Ravenscraig steel works provided employment for several railway workers as raw products for steel making were moved to the plant. Iron ore was imporeted through Hunterston as well as coal. The nearby Mossend yard was also the largest in Scotland and many services started or terminated here. The freight locos used on all these trains were serviced here.
