Long Row, New Lanark
I first visited New Lanark in 1973 when some families still inhabited the run-down houses in this rather bleak street and the future of the village could not have been foretold. The painstaking renovation and transformation of the village into a world heritage centre and important tourist attraction has been a major triumph of conservation.

Workers housing at New Lanark
Basic housing was provided for the mill workers and their families comprising two rooms in tenements next to the mill. By 1820 up to 2500 persons were housed of whom 1500 worked in the mills. The choice of tall buildings was dictated by the tight confines of the site within the gorge.
