Aviation in Lanark ? a Centenary
Twenty aviators came to Lanark to take part in flying competitions in August 1910, and attracted 250000 visitors. The main achievement was the first recording of the speed of aircraft over a measured mile, with two records being achieved – a speed of 75.95 mph and an altitude recorded of 6750 ft. Two aircraft crashed on trees on the race course but it was the first airshow in the world in which nobody was killed or seriously injured although, just in case, 6 beds were reserved at the local hospital [NHS take note!]. The event is commemorated by a sculpture at the entrance to Lanark Loch - see Image and Image
